Aline Fruhauf
(1907-1978)

Aline Fruhauf specialized in caricature and worked in various mediums to produce works that reflect a humanistic expression. She was born in New York where her career began and flourished and later moved to Washington, DC. Many of her caricatures were accepted by publications such as the New York Post, the Morning Telegraph, Theatre Arts, Creative Art, Esquire, Vogue and the Washingtonian. During her life she associated with many artists such as Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Grant Arnold, Stuart Davis, Raphael Soyer and Adolph Dehn, many of whom she depicted in caricature. Her work is in the collections of numerous institutions such as the Library of Congress, the NY Public Library, the Museum of the City of New York, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Georgetown University, University of Wyoming and the National Portrait Gallery.

Aline Fruhauf began her professional career in 1926 with the sale of a caricature to the New York World. She produced an extraordinary volume of work before her death in 1978. For years her drawings of celebrities appeared regularly in the New York dailies, as well as in such periodicals as Musical America, Theatre Arts, Dance Observer, Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Esquire.

Making Faces is her record of a fascinating creative life-a record in entertaining pictures and in words almost as witty and graphic.
